16 September: Prelude |
Daylight: - AEAF: 185 fighters; Spitfires and Tempests flew armed reconnaissance flights in the Arnhem area and other parts of Holland. One Spitfire and one Tempest did not return to base. - ADGB: Reconnaissance photo-flights by Canadian no.400 and 430 sq. Tilburg,Nijmegen, Arnhem, and along the rivers Maas, Rijn and Schelde.There was special attention to the bridges over the Rijn. Results were flown back with high speed to the head quarters off General Dempsey. There is a mysterious story of a B17 ( 214 sq.?) that was seen over the Arnhem dropzones without any escort fighters, in which an allied commander could have been inspecting the area, other reports say that the flying fortress was heavily escorted ? - Luftwaffe: No information available for this day. Night: - Bomber Command: 54 Lancasters and 5 Mosquitos were send to Flak positions near the Moerdijk-bridge area. These Flak positions were on the flightpath off the coming air armada. They come across 2 enemy planes and 2 of the Lancasters did not return. Also airfields that could threaten the operation were attacked. |
