the entire length of the war had several mates who were in the Kings Own Scottish
Borderers, who were part of Operation Market Garden, many of them never returned. I can
remember one of them who later became a great family friend telling me of the horrors he
witnessed as a teenager and never to forget the sacrifices that these young brave men
made. This page does all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice proud. Lest We Forget

for the 40th anniversary and the history suddenly became very real to me. My interest in
the subject came about because of my father (John Duncan who sadly is no longer with
us)was an ex para (4 Para I belive) and although he was too young to be part of Arnhem he
was always very proud of his old regiment and what they achieved at Arnhem despite
overwhelming odds! I will always remember the emotion he showed whilst visiting the
cemetary in Oosterbeek and whilst speaking to some of the "old boys". Arnhem was
a special place for him and, in turn, has become a special place for me.

Comments: Bedankt voor U webpage. Het is prima. Het spijt mij mar mijn Nederlands is niet
veel goed. I was only three years old when the war ended, so have no direct involvement,
but for many years I have been interested in Market Garden. This is for three reasons. (1)
Croydon, my adopted home town for 30 years, is twinned with Arnhem - because of its 1 Para
association, (2) my birthplace is Birmingham from where several of the South Staffs troops
came from - and I have met a few and (3) as a profesional communications engineer and a
Radio Amateur I have been fascinated by the communications difficulties which plagued much
of the operation - not as simple a wrong crystals for vhf setso. I have read both
Cornelius Ryan's book and that of General Urquart - both of which touch on the radio
communications issue. I have been searching for Tony Deane-Drummonds book for several
years but with no success. This may seem a trivial issue in comparison with the sacrifises
of the allied troops and the Dutch people, but it at least gives me some link with our
joint histories. Thanks again. John Simkins.

baltjes.

my prayers and heartfelt thanks to all those gallant souls, living or dead, for their
contribution and sacrifice. On this Sunday which also commemorates the 60th Anniversary of
the battle of Britain may we also remember the Arnhem battle and those who fought and lost
their lives in the cause of freedom.

Comments: My compliments with your very extended site. Especially the Roll of Honor I
found very impressive. I hope you will excuse me that I wish to make one remark concerning
the introduction page: You mention that in 1940 the Dutch army consisted of 10.000
soldiers and that the Germans attacked with 17.700 men. These figures are not correct. One
Dutch division counted 10.000 men and one German division 17.700 men. The Germans attacked
with Heeresgruppe B, which had 29 divisions. The total Dutch army consisted of about
275.000 men.The Dutch combat forces were divided into 4 armycorpses of 2 divisions each
plus a number of regiments which were operating apart from these armycorpses .

Comments: This is a truly excellent website; well organised, easy to use, clearly written,
thoroughly researched and containing an enormous amount of information, all of it relevant
and fascinating. I am currently doing an A-level history research project on the
Operation, and I am constantly referring to your website for all kinds of information. My
grandfather took part in the Operation as a member of the Guards Armoured Division, and
returned to Arnhem in 1994 for a 50th anniversary memorial event. I know that Arnhem was a
horrifying experience for all involved (my grandfather was involved in the artillery, and
remembers having to signal to fire smoke to allow the paratroopers to escape as they were
being shot to pieces by German tanks.) The immense detail in your site really brings home
the sacrifices that were made, with reports talking not of groups but of individual men
and their actions. I am amazed at the detail you have managed to compile, presumably from
first hand veterans memories. In Britain, especially the south-east, we felt the force of
German bombing, the threat of invasion and the suspense of the Battle of Britain, but we
find it hard to imagine what it is like to be occupied by an enemy army, to have our
freedom and nationality taken away, and to have war raging in our own towns and
countryside (we have been lucky enough not to have had a battle on British soil since
1784, with the Battle of Culloden in Scotland, and we haven't been invaded since 1066!) We
salute the sacrifices made by the people of Holland, and the other countries involved, and
their determination never to give up hope. We must never let such a war devastate Europe
again, and never allow such enormous human suffering to occur. The most important way of
doing this is never to forget what happened, and sources like your website, with your
obvious devotion and fascination with your subject, are an excellent way of keeping the
past alive for people today to learn and respect what the people of the past experienced.
Well done, and I hope you continue to work on this and other sites, as you obviously have
a natural talent for history, research, writing and presentation . from Matthew Foster

landed with the Parachute Regiment in Arnhem in 1944. He was severely wounded and moved to
the German held Catholieke Hospital in Apeldoorn along with Sgt. Don Guthrie and others.
My mother worked with the Red Cross and was deputed to the hospital in Apeldoorn from
Amsterdam. In her capacity as Zuster Onnie Kroes she recieved several letters from the
boys who managed to escape among whom was Gordon Sheriff. She was subsequently decorated
for her part in saving several lives during operation Market Garden. Its a great story and
I'd like your help in trying to contact Maj. G.Sheriff (if he is still alive) or his
family. He had a baby daughter born just a few days before the drop at Arnhem. .My mother
is now 84 years old and lives in India with my sister in a rural area on an organic
farm. She is the widow of my father Brigadier. S.W. Shahane, who was also a WW II veteran.I

Comments: Your information on the Arnhem portion of Operation Market-Garden is very good,
but your site is very misleading because in all actuality Operation Market-Garden was much
larger than just the Battle of Arnhem. Maybe you should include information about the
101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions as well as information relating to the ground assault
(Operation Garden). Excellent visualization, the maps were very clear.

information but is thought provoking too. My wife and I write battlefield guide-books eg
Somme, Ypres, Gallipoli, D-Day and did what was probably the first Market Garden Guide way
back in 1984. It was very small but did cover the whole corridor. We are now beginning a
much larger guide and map in the same format as our others - 270 pages, 130 colour pics
etc and need some help with locating memorials over the whole route that have been put up
since 1984. Thankyou for the site. It is a wonderful act of remembrance.

Comments: Terrific site, I am an Army officer studying at the US Army Command and General
Staff College. I am studying the entire OMG campaign, but believe the Battle for Arnhem to
be Montgomery's Center of Gravity (COG) for the entire operation. As you seem well
entrenched in the annals of this operation, what are your thoughts? I imagine due to the
lack of information on anything but Arnhem and the British 1st Airborne that you feel the
same as I. Interesting though is that the letters you have posted all seem to articulate
the COG as the Nijmagen Bridge. Do you believe this to be an immediate attempt at
revisionist history by the commanders or an accurate portrayel of the objectives prior to
the operation. I would be most interested in corresponding with you or any veterans who
could articulate on this phenomenon. Thank you for your hard work in remembering these
heros. vr David Sheridan

think Co. C. His first and last combat jump was Sept.17,1944 operation Market Garden in
Holland. The plane a C47 was hit and they had to jump before they reached their drop zone.
Seventeen men jumped before the plane burned and broke into with the crew still on board.
Wounded while in the plane ( shrapnel in both legs), wounded again on the way down (shot
through left upper arm),and again on the ground (shot in the right hand loosing two
fingers) he was lucky. Of the seventeen men that jumped only seven reached the ground
alive that he knew of and were taken prisoner till the end of the war. Your site is great

Comments: My father fought at Arnhem and was taken prisoner near the bridge, he is 80 next
march. It has been interesting seeing things like the signed notes which my father still
has. I am 40 and will be in arnhem in Feb so I am hoping to visit some memorials and take
some photos for him. in the meantime he can look at your site which I have discovered
today, and what a good site it is. Thanks. Brian Whitlock. Any tips on what to see would
be apreciated.

Comments: My father "Curly" was a Glider Pilot at the battle, he is still going
strong on the wrong side of 80. He attends the odd reunion but has only been back to
Arnhem a couple of times. I myself went with him several years ago, we visited the
cemetary and I dont think I will ever forget the emotions that it stired in me as wall as
my dad. Amazing place. Great Site keep up the good work.

Comments: I noticed that your account is limited to the Arnheim campaign without much
mention of the US airborn Campaigns to the south especially the important Rhine crossing
at Nijmegin.

Comments: My father died 5 years ago this week. His name was Fred Green and he was at
Arnhem. He parachuted into Ginkel Heath. He never made it to the bridge. He was lucky
enough to be at hte 40th Anniversary in 1984 and he stayed at the home of Gee & Ella
Kersten. |
