Comments: My wife's uncle, T/5 Robert J. Whiteman, served with the 82nd HQ Signal Group from 3/42 until 8/45. During this time he managed to take over 600 private photos of WWII, approximately 35 of which are from the Market Garden arena. Several of these are pre-invasion, but there are several photos showing the bridge at Nijmegen, the Power Plant, Nebo monistary, and assorted views around the area of operations. Many of these will be featured in a book, if I ever find a publisher, about the exploits of the 504/505/HQ Signal efforts during the war. As a representative of a family which has had a proud military past, may I extend my condolences to you and your family over the loss of your parents. To be proud of one's parents is to be proud of one's self.

Comments: My grandfather was in the paras and his stories will always stay in my mind. This website is a good appraisal of the men that fought trying to end the war quickly. I feel so proud that british paras held Arnhem for 9 days when it was only meant to be for a few. They wrote on the walls of houses, f*** off jerries no surrender and when they surrendered, they wore their red berets instead of their helmets to show their pride and dedication to their country.

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit The Netherlands in 1994 for the 50th Anniversary celebration of the liberation. This was an experience I will never forget. The gratitude that the people of The Netherlands showed the veterans even after all of these years is something every American should see.

Comments: I am a twenty-two year old college student who studies and absorbs every piece of World War II history I can get my hands on. Many people often say that my generation has "forgotten the sacrifices made generations ago." While this is true for many of my generation, there are also those of us that will never forget and try to learn as much as we can to honor those that fought and died in the greatest struggle of the twentieth century. And, it isn't just about the American troops that we feel this way. As Americans we also know how much our British comrades sacrificed also. And for them as well as our native countrymen we known that a simple thank you can never repay them for what they did. Know that we will never forget you.

Comments: This website is a huge contribution to the commemoration of the men and women who lived and fought through the Second World War. Many of your veterans start their stories saying that they are not heroes or did nothing extraordinary. They are wrong. All of the men and women who willingly gave up their youth and risked their lives in the name of freedom are heroes. I am a member of a British re-enactment group which has close ties to the Normandy Veterans Association and every time we meet them or provide an honour guard for their ceremonies I am completely humbled. It is to these men and women as well as the people of Occupied Europe who stood against the enemy that we owe the freedom we now enjoy. Their story must be recorded and told to future generations which this site does in such an impressive way. 'We will remember'

Comments: Have visited Arnhem twice and will do again. I found the site while researching why australians are held in such high regard by the townsfolk. My understanding was that the operation was a US/British/canadian affair. My wife as a tourist found when it was known she was australian, there was always someone, in the cathedral or the museums, on hand to assist or translate. We were very touched. It seems that many australians were part of the combined forces from the data here. Thanks for the site and thanks to the people of Arnhem.

Comments: An excellent site.. an excellent history resource and my sincere congratulations. I am the very proud son of a Glider Pilot (S/Sgt John D. Slee) who told me little of the exploits of this brave force.. I guess he thought of it as many others did.. "just doing my job".. He inspired me many years ago to join the airborne wing of the Aust Army where I served as an Air Dispatcher.. The experience of flight may have been similar.. but the glory remains firmly with him and all of his mates.. They were heroes and should never be forgotten.. Your web site has taken a giant leap to ensure this is so.. Thank you. Pat Slee.

Comments: I love the photo of your family Andries. With three children how do you find the time to maintain this fantastic site? You give thanks to the Paras for their courage and tenacity. Can we say thankyou to the many thousands of Dutch people who hid Allied servicemen as well as Jews and other "enemies of the Nazi State" all through the occupation. They risked their own lives to provide such shelter. We will never forget the courage of the wonderful Dutch people.

Comments: I had the Honour of meeting some of the Arnhem Vets, when myself and 13 other Canadian Military Engineer's visited the Netherlands last September for the Annual Market Garden ceremonies. It was an experience that will forever stay with me. I would like to thank some of the vets that I met and they are, L.Brumwell and Harry Booth. Harry, I could not track down your friend Pip Newton whom you spent time with as a P.O.W. sorry.. I would also like to thank all the Arnhem Vets who signed my copy of "A Bridge to Far", its something my children will cherish and pass along over the years. One last note and that is about this web site, BRAVO, Well Done, its a great tribute to all the Market Garden Vets. From One Engineer to another CHIMO

Comments: A superb site. Served with 10(V)Para 4 Coy between 1981-1984. Many fond memories of doing the ceremonial drop during that time. Some good photographs and great times with the veterans afterwards. The sight of the youngsters laying flowers on the graves still sticks in my mind. Plan to come back sometime this year to visit. Any proposed arrangements for the September time events? Best Wishes Paul Cunningham

Comments: I have just been working in Holland and had some spare time so I visited the Airborne museum in Oosterbeek - it has been some what of a pilgramage for me as my father who served in the 1st Battalion of The Parachute Regt after the war told me so much of the history of the battle for Arnhem. What an excellent museum and a fitting memorial to the young men and women involved. I will certainly go back to the museum as my time was rather short.Just like to say this site is excellent and very informative.Well done for keeping the memories alive.
