As in so many conflicts, there were so many young boys killed in their fight for Freedom. We MUST NOT let their sacrifices die but let their names live in the youth of today.

It is now three years since I first visited Arnhem and Oosterbeek, where Cpl John Ruddy gave his life for a cause which he so believed in. To this very day it is my pledge that his memory will be known to all our future generations, and if anyone has any information or knew John (known to friends as Jack) I would welcome their contact.

This site is great because it remembers the mighty battle what's fought in Arnhem. I have much respect for the veterans, they deserve that for their sacrifieses. This site remembers the free people of today that for the freedom lots of lads died.

Arnhem is my birthplace. I lived in Arnhem during the Battle of Arnhem. left for Canada in 1953. Saw the airborne landings first hand and also the many prisoners who where marched past our house. If it was'nt for the sacrifices made by so many in those days, I don't think I would be enjoying the life I have now, living in Canada. We really appriciate what you do with preserving the moments. I will be there again this spring to pay my respects to the many who gave their lifes for us all.

After the War ended I was transferred from the 1st Bn Canadian Scottish Regiment, 3rd Canadian Division, to the 4th Bn CScotR which was formed to join the Occupation forces. We were sent to Arnhem during the formation of our unit, and I walked with my friends over much of the ground where the fighting took place. Although I had engaged in some very difficult battles during the hostilities, what I saw during our stay in Arnhem developed in me an intense admiration for the paratroopers who fought and died there. May the memory of their heroism never fade.

I'm a Vietnam Veteran of the 101st Airborne. My son and I are paratroopers with the WWII Airborne Demonstration team. We had the honor of jumping Sept.17 and Sept. 19th at Son and Veghel from a Dakota. We had 25 paratroopers jump. We would like to Thank You and all the Dutch people for the warm welcome that we received. I will Never Forget how everyone referred to our WWII Veterans as "Liberators"  We will do what we can to notify WWII Paratroopers about General Sosabowski and ask the vets for letters of support.

As a boy I was in a cadet force which was affiliated to the Parachute Regiment. Consequently I am fiercely proud of them and all they have achieved. I am sometimes worried that people no longer understand or care about history or the sacrifice so many people made to give me and my family the freedoms we enjoy. To see the work you have put into this website is humbling and I thank you for this fantastic resource. God bless to Andries and family and all our Dutch friends.

My dad told me a story about market garden and it happened to be the very first war movie that I ever watch with him. He was in the Korean War and told me about the sacrifices of people in wwII and the great battles for freedom. One of those stories happen to be about Market Garden. He is gone now, but I have something that I can pass onto my son and that the love of ones country and freedom.

From a 25 year old to all of the Veterans and those that did not make it back. Thank you. I, for one, will always remember the sacrificies made by yourselves in the cause of freedom. Thank you.

My family lived in Kolkakkerweg, Ede during the battle of Arnhem. I was 10 months old. An RAF bomber, attempting to nail the nearby German panzer barracks, nailed Kolkakkerweg instead. My babysitter and many of our neighbours were killed. I never knew the full story until I served with the Australian Army in Vietnam 1968 and returned to Holland for a bit of R&R. Being parachute qualified I thought I'd go and visit the Airborne museum. The resulting research I di.d arounbd Ede was a real eye opener. So many brace people!

In prepartion for a trip to Netherlands I just stumbled upon your site. As a Glider pilot I landed near Grave. I have visited the Freedom Museum three times. I will visit again about 5 March. This museum is a wonderful example of telling the story of this famous mission during WWII. There is a Musuem located in Lubbock, Texas \"The Silent Wings Museum\" dedicated to the WWII Glider pilots, and their Airborne Brothers. We welcome all interested visitors who may be visiting the USA. guyw1920@aol.com

Since my last viewing of the site, I spent much of the afternoon going from page to page of this new format and it does my old heart wonders that you guy's have kept the memory alive. Yes it is 60 years ago that we tried damd hard to reach Arnhem. Gen.Horrocks was a very nice man and worried about the job that was expected of his men. We can always say what should have been achieved after the dust has settled. I later met the General in Hannover, Germany. I was a Staff-car driver .He gave me a sandwich as I had no lunch. Pte Alfred Cowley, No 14631576, who died at Arnhem on 24/09/1944 was a boyhood friend of mine before the war. Alfie was a quiet, inoffensive boy, and he was only 19 when he died. He lived just next door to us at No 1 Prestage Street, Poplar, in the East End Docklands of London. I heard he died in heroic circumstances and I am trying to establish this.

There seems to be some confusion as to both the genesis and authority to launch Market Garden. The general consensus is that it was in fact Montgomery's idea to carry out a joint airborne and land attack on the bridges. His not so covert aim was to be the first to reach Berlin. Any discussion on these ideas would be much appreciated.

This message goes out to all, My Granddad fought in the battle at Arhem. His name was Lionel Tarr who ended up at the First Aid Post in Oosterbeek after falling through the school roof whilst in action. This untold story will soon be available. I like to also add that through the bravery of those men on both sides that fought with their lives I have learnt that we owe them all a great respect, my thoughts will contiue to think about them so long as I live, May God gide you all with everlasting peace.

Hello, Just wanted to comment on an excellent, informative website. I won't go into great detail here, but my father and his brother were both veterans of WWII and served with the 23rd Field Company RCE and were at the evacuation of the British Airborne. If you are interested, I can provide you with a MS PowerPoint presentation which outlines the Company from inception to the end of WWII. I can also provide the text from a chapter called "Arnhem" a book which was written and a copy provided to each of the 23rd Field Coy veterans about their exploits in WWII. Again if interested, email me at above adderess.
Keep up the excellent site. Only wish I could go over this year for the anniversary of Holland's liberation. Bless you and all veterans.

A fascinating site.  My father - Clifford James Brownlow (84 years old today and not too well...) - was part of the 1st British Airborne at Arnhem. Dad was in the Support Company of 156 Parachute Battalion under the late Lt-Col Sir "Dicky" des Voeux. One of Dad's most treasured possessions is a book of  hand-written 'thank-you' notes from the children of Nijmegen, which he was given to him when he visited on the 50th Anniversary in 1994. Thank-you, children of the Netherlands, for making my dad such a proud man.

My father, James William "Bill" Wheeler, was an American paratrooper with the 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles", 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 2nd Btn., HQ Co. He was proud to serve his country and to be one of the men who helped liberate Holland. He had good things to say about the Dutch people - how kind they were to share food and shelter, and how brave they were, helping the Americans, Brits and Poles even with the Germans still in their midst. He was amazed at how clean they kept their homes, even in the midst of a war!

hi, my uncle was involved in the evacuation from Arnhem. (Opertaion Berlin) we had the priviledge of going to Arnhem 2 summers ago with our 3 children to see this site we felt we had a part in, through him! we also went to where my other uncle died and then to Holten cemetry where he is buried. it was an almost overwhelming feeling to be there in those places. while there at Holten cemetry we also had the priviledge of meeting a dutch family that had travelled there just to say "thank you" to the young men who had given their lives for their country! what a joy to hear they are not forgotten!

To Whom It May Concern; My Uncle, George B. Merrick, date of death 28/10/1944 at the age of 20. Buried in Bergen-Op-Zoom, Holland. He was listed with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise\'s .C.I.C.) I remember stories from when I was young about my uncle but would like to learn more. My Mother told us that he was a sharpe shooter and was shot between the eyes while on patrol in the area of this cemetery. My Father would not talk about the war and respect to him I never asked questions. But since he has passed on and the recent 60th anniversary celebrations in Holland I find myself interested in finding out more if possible. He was born in Westphall, Nova Scotia, Canada. I look forward to learning as much about my Uncle as possible. Whatever information you can forward including pictures of his grave sight, info on his troop, area and battle he was in, anything would be most appreciated. Respectfully submitted, Clayton P. Merrick, 283 First Lake Drive, Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia, Canada B4C 3J9

He was Gunner Harry Hall and just before the 17th Sept Harry was in hospital and his cousin ( Ron Ellis not found) told him that Arnhem was on and he could come with his lot and jump, and over the drop area Ellis went out and Harry followed on but a round fired by the enemy went through R.Ellis and then through Harry\'s front Pack and up through his chute and Harry landed badly braking a bone in his shoulder but undeterred he carried on and was made a POW near the RE HQ by the Bridge. I have his photo if you would like to see him.

First of all i like to say a very good site. I was born in Renkum in 1959 at my grandparents house, and know the area of "market garden" quit well. I rember my grandfather taking me to diffrent places around Arnhem and Renkum and showing me the sites of where the allies landed, were the german units and tanks where. I remember going for walks in the woods around Renkum and seeing the trenches and foxholes that were still there.

My grandfather worked in the mental hospital during the war (the one that is in the movie "a bridge to far"). He told me how the hid 6 jewish people there under the stairs at the hospital and 3 at his home, I have been trying to find as much information as i can about market garden or about Renkum and Arnhem and area during the war. My mother and some of her sisters and brothers moved up groninger during the war and spend the last cold winter during the war there.

I moved to Albert, Canada in 1975 and it's sad to say but most Canadians don't know much or anything about the war and what they did for Holland. If anyone has any information or knows of any site relathing to this please email me at dutch8591@yahoo.com thank you. PS. my opa and oma's names were Jan Aarsen & Grietje(van der Velde) Aarsen, they lived in Renkum.

Greetings to all those that I met at last years commemoration. A very emotional journey visiting Nijmegan, Grave, Oosterbeek, Arnhem and Elst. It was moving and very humbling to meet so many of the veterans from the US, Netherlands, United Kingdom and especially Poland. I was particularly thrilled to witness first hand General Sosobowski's grandson parachute in Driel. My congratulations to all those wonderful Dutch people who keep the memory of these men so sacred.A special congratulations on the organisation of the 60th anniversary commemrations. Driel was like going to visit my family in Poland. It is overwhelming how those citizens of Driel have taken the Poles into their hearts. I will certainly visit all those towns when I do the Vierdaagse again in 2007. Lt (AAC) Rys Herzig.

I recently learned that my grandfather, Adrian Hartzler, was a military surgeon with the 82nd airborn. During Market-Garden he operated on wounded paratroopers for 38 hours uninterrupted in a small house outside of Nijmegen. Years later, when the film A Bridge Too Far was being made, he was invited to Holland to be a technical consultant. His name is listed in the credits for the film but not mentioned in the book. He collected a scrapbook of newspaper articles and other memorabilia from Market-Garden which my mother keeps. I will examine these documents when I see her this summer and report back regarding their contents. Sincerely, Dan Hartzler

Phil Halliwell

My father Corporal Stanley Halliwell was in the 1st Parachute Squadron, Royal Engineers and took part in the Battle of Arnhem in September 1944. He passed away in March 1999 aged 79 years. Recently, while browsing in a book shop, I came across a book called 'Forgotten Voices of the Second World War' which had the words of veterans who took part in the various campaigns of WWII. I quickly moved to September 1944 and imagine my astonishment when on page 356 I found the following account written by my father: Corporal Stan Halliwell 1st Parachute Squadron RE.

About thirty yards in front of us was a German tank with another close by. I thought it was empty, so my mate Hicks and I ran towards it. As I got within 15 yards I saw one of its small guns traverse. I ducked down and Hicks, who was right behind me, was killed. I don't know why, but I thought the safest place to hide was underneath the German tank. As I lay under it, panting, I could hear the radio, in German, talking to the other tank. Then he opened up with his main armament and nearly blew my eardrums. As if that wasn't bad enough he began to start the tank. Then one of our lads hit it with a PIAT. I thought,'Christ, I've had enough of this!' I crawled out and put my hands up, and was taken prisoner. The Germans later sent me back to Colonel Frost with a message. I agreed to go but at every corner I came to, some bugger fired at me. Eventually I found Colonel Frost and delivered the message. He said, 'Well, if you go back, tell them to go to hell.' So I thought, 'I'm not going back to tell them that,' so I stayed. Thanks to your excellent website I can establish that the above event with the tank took place on September 19th, the date Hicks was killed. My father was eventually captured for a second time and spent the rest of the war in the P.O.W. camp Stalag IIA in Neubrandenberg. He was liberated by the Russians in April 1945 and had to make his own way to the American lines which was at the River Elbe.

My Grandad fought in Arnhem, He told me many things about what happened during his later years in life. He told me how he saw his friend decapitated by a piece of radiator on the ground floor of the school from a German granade, he also was hit on the back of his head and thought he was 'dead' but managed to escape. He told me how 'Frost' Ordered him and his friend "TATE AND HAINS, GET OUT THERE AND TAKE OUT THOSE GERMANS" They both promptly dived out of the window only to find 6 foot high railing that they couldn't get over. They were in direct german fire and had to dive back through the window. But only my grandad made it. I have so many stories to tell, and I have a video recording of my Grandad telling so many intersting stories. One story is about a young 19yr old soldier who was dieing on the Bridge, my Grandad held his hand and gave him his own Morphine, he then covered him with his own coat, when he returned after the war was over he visited his family to pass on his last wishes.

Andries and Frans, Great to meet you again over the commemoration weekend. I've been shouted at a few times in my profession but Andries shouting "Bagpipe man!" on the heath was a first. Our Dad, Gordon Brian Griffiths, we think, was in the 156th regiment (Indian Division - by the shape of his beret)? He was a POW in Stalag 1XB. We emigrated from the UK to New Zealand in 1970, but sadly Dad passed away in 1983. He spoke very little of this time in his life and we would love to know if anyone remembers him? Barbara visited Arnhem last week, September 17, and was touched deeply. Unfortunately, because we don't have Dad's No., etc., it has made things difficult.

Keep up the good works, Wim Keller.

I have never in the field of human conflict seen a leader on a webpage which was so PATHETIC! Now lads, your effort and website itself are commendable, and your intentions are good, but please please get RID! of that intro which makes the battle of Arnhem look like a stupic computergame, with your gunsounds and hollow rhetoric.. Now if you would change the sound into the Hymn \"Jerusalem\" then you truly would capture what it was those boys did for us!! I personally am involved in a few war films, of which two are shot at present and I would strongly advise and urge you to change the sound of your intro! not only out of respect for the guys who fought for our freedom, but also because it makes the rest of your site a hell of a lot more credible and professional. Best wishes.H.J.Vrielink

My father John Lane (Jack)left England for Arnham twice. On his first departure, 5 minutes after the glider took off there was a lurch as the tow rope first became wound round a treee and then snapped, the glider came down, tore through a fence and bumped to a standstill in a root-field. This was 13 miles from Canterbury. Despite all his efforts the commanding officer was unable to get another seviceable glider, the only one left was one without seats. The lads had to fit it out in order to go with the 2nd lift the next day. Following the battle, troops began to withdraw but unfortunately for Jack's platoon there was no way out and they were left with no choice but to surrender and he became a prisoner of war.

When once asked if the film A Bridge too Far was realistic, he replied, "well I never heard that music". Jack's dear friend Bob Holden was killed during the battle and Jack chose never to return to Arnhem, saying he had left his best friend there and would have to do so again if he returned. Jack lived a happy and contented life, saying if he had a choice and could live his life again - he would not leave out the war years as he felt they had given him great compassion for his fellowmen. Jack died in 2002, a much loved father, grandfather and greatgrandfather.

My Father fought in WWII and was a member of the Canadian 4th Divison Regiment. He fought in Holland and in that time made friends with a Willems family. The members of the family were Quiel, Lucie, Mary, Bessie, Villy and P. Willems. The address or something that resembles an address is Blacisstraat 3 Bergon Op Zoom or it could be Glacisstraat. I have a photo of the family. Also another person he made friends with was a gentleman named Wilhelm Grothe apparently a Dutch Film Star. It was this family or Wilhelm who gave my Father a diamond stick pin in appreciation for the tea bags and bread that my Dad would give to these people. He made a diamond engagement ring for my Mother from the stick pin. I am just curious to know if there are any surviving members of the family and would like to make contact.
