General-Major der Waffen SS Heinz Harmel dead...

Harmel first came into action in The Netherlands in May 1940, he was involved in the heavy fighting on 'De Grebbeberg' as compagnie commander of   'verfugingstruppen'. Then after serving in Russia, and later in France during Overlord, his decimated division went into action in Holland.

Harmel was commander of 10th SS Frundsberg during Operation Market Garden. At the time of the landings Harmel's forces were mainly located aprox. 20 km east of Arnhem. They were directed to Nijmegen to defend the bridges. Because Frost his units had captured the Arnhem road bridge, Frundsberg made use of the ' Pannerden ' ferry to get to Nijmegen.

 
Harmel commanded the forces attacking the british para's at the bridge for several days before he set of for Nijmegen himself.

The para's knew Harmel as a 'Gentleman', approving a sease fire to get the wounded para's to hospitals. Harmel and Frost met several times after the war. The men had respect for eachother.

His death leaves Otto Kumm and Wilhelm Mohnke as the two surviving Waffen-SS Generals and division commanders today.
