![]() Harmel first came into action in The Netherlands in May 1940, he was involved in the heavy fighting on 'De Grebbeberg' as compagnie commander of 'verfugingstruppen'. Then after serving in Russia, and later in France during Overlord, his decimated division went into action in Holland. Harmel was commander of 10th SS Frundsberg during Operation Market Garden. At the time of the landings Harmel's forces were mainly located aprox. 20 km east of Arnhem. They were directed to Nijmegen to defend the bridges. Because Frost his units had captured the Arnhem road bridge, Frundsberg made use of the ' Pannerden ' ferry to get to Nijmegen.
The para's knew Harmel as a 'Gentleman', approving a sease fire to get the wounded para's to hospitals. Harmel and Frost met several times after the war. The men had respect for eachother. This photo was taken in 1979 in Holland where both men shake hands. Harmel and Frost met several times. Also Harmel visited Frost in Britain. His death leaves Otto Kumm and Wilhelm Mohnke as the two surviving Waffen-SS Generals and division commanders today. |
