Lieutenant - General Hans Von Tettau

operating in the west of the landing zones and the west side of the Oosterbeek perimeter

The Commander-in-Chief German Armed Forces In Holland at the time was Luftwaffe General Christiansen, and it was he who ordered Lt. General Hans Von Tettau to form a 'Battle Group' to combat the Airborne landings. In the initial stages of the battle, fought around the landing zones, Von Tettau was able to collect the following forces.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

S.S.- N.C.O. School Arnheim
Col. M. Lippert

 

These men were young well-trained potential officers. Three Battalions strong, they lacked their full complement of heavy weapons and had no transport.

S.S.- Training and Replacement Battalion 4
Lt. Labahn

This unit had 183 men, seemed unfit to serve as front line troops; they were guarding stores in the   Langenberg Hotel area at the time of the drop.

Naval Manning Battalion 10
Kapitan Lieutnant Zaubzer

Stationed in the Renkum area on the 17/O9/44 this units strength was unknown. It attacked Heelsum on the 18/O9/44 suffering heavy casualties. The Officers and NCO's of this Bn., were supplied from Lippert's unit.

S.S.- Surveillance Battalion 3
Sturmbannführer Paul Anton Helle

This Battalion made first contact with the Airborne, fought the K.O.S.Bs and was driven off the LZs. It was caught in the open by the second lift on the 18th. Most of the Battalion routed to the north and Helle was later relieved of his command.

Tank Company 224

This Company, consisting of French Renault tanks
(captured in 1940), advanced from Renkum through the woods bordering D.Z. 'X'. All six of them were quickly knocked out by A/Tank fire.

Fliegerhorst Battalion 3

This unit was responsible for downing one gilder on the 17th. The Inscription on the glider read. " Is this trip really necessary".

Soesterberg Fliegerhorst Battalion

Arriving at DZ 'X' on the 18th, this Bn., was weak in numbers and was unable to make any progress. It was later reinforced by two companys from Lipperts Battalion.

Regiment Knoche
Knoche

This unit arrived on Ginkel Heath on the 19th, it had three ex French Char Bl tanks. The main gun had been replaced by a flamethrower.

S.S.- Battalion Eberwein
Eberwein

A full strength Battalion when it arrived from Benekom on the 18th. It advanced down the axis of the railway line towards Arnhem and on the 19th it was at Wolfheze and was attacked by mistake by the Luftwaffe.

Regiment 42
Sichecheit

This Regiment arrived at Ede on the 18th. It supported attacks against the K.O.S.B. on Ginkel Heath.
